A few months ago, I created a Burning bowl for one of my customers. I chose not to name the Goddess bowl because this customer in particular, Arlene Bailey, who is a Shamanic Priestess, is a powerful woman and I somehow knew she’d come up with just the right name. Other names presented themselves, but each time I knew that she was Al-Kimia, the Alchemist.”

I've used the name alchemist for various pieces I’ve created over the years and most recently one of my necklaces. After reading what Arlene said, I decided it was time to name one of my Burning Bowls Al-Kimia-The Alchemist. It certainly fits the one I have chosen.

The story of the burning bowl:

Unity Church has a special ceremony each New Year’s Eve. A large bowl is placed at the altar and each member of the church is asked to write down problems or vices they wish to annihilate from their lives.. It could be a wish to quit smoking or drinking. It might be a desire to loose weight or to quit any of a number of addictions. Each person places their list into the bowl and at midnight, the bowl is lit. Everyone watches as the fire burns away all the troubles. I decided years ago that it would be a good idea to create personal burning bowls and they have been very popular.

Al-Kimia is 10” h x 6” w x 6”deep and priced at $68.00 When you are not using her for ceremony, you can place incense or candle in the stained glass basin.

It’s very hard for me to believe that it is that time of the year once again. Each year in April, I take all the Goddess planters I have worked on all winter, down to my local Farmer’s/Artist’s market to sell. Prior to that, I create a post for all of you to see, and hopefully purchase. The time has come!

The first pictures are of the current new planters for sale. I have then shown the larger planters still available from last year, which I have placed on sale. The only reason they are still available , I think, is the price. The larger ones are also a bit expensive to ship. I still wanted you to have a chance to see them.

Often, people ask me what religion I follow. It’s always a difficult question for me because I believe in many aspects of many religions. Wikepedia says that Universalism, in its primary sense, refers to religious, theological, and philosophical concepts with universal application or applicability. Universalism is a term used to identify particular doctrines considering all people in their formation.

It is also stated that a community that calls itself Universalist, may emphasize the universal principles of most religions and accept other religions in an inclusive manner, believing in a universal reconciliation between humanity and the divine.

So, if I have to give the way I think and believe a name, In many ways, I’d say that I am a Universalist. My father was a Quaker, my mother was Catholic and my grandfather followed Trancendentalism, which started as a movement in the early 19th century. It is a belief of God in all things seen and unseen. This is a simple answer to a complex belief. Henry David Thoreau, was a Trancendentalist. You can see what a complication it was for me sorting things out.

Among many, Buddism is one of the religions that I have come to appreciate. There are numerous aspects of this religion that I can relate to in my everyday life. I found a beautiful Budda pendant that I’ve incorporated into my Universal Woman necklace and I believe the pendant is what prompted the creation of Universal Woman and this post. I am always inspired to create from the objects I find. Below are listed a few of the quotes by Budda that I take pleasure in.

What a Yummy Ice Cream- And Sooo Easy!

Catchy title isn’t it? My friend Pamela, gave me a recipe from a most interesting book titled "Grazing Along the Crooked Road," by Betty Skeens. It is for homemade ice cream and the good news is that it doesn't require the use of an ice cream maker!

The book can almost be used as a guide for the 253 mile route of Virginia’s Heritage Music Trail and features festivals, music venues and to quote Laura Neary’s comment in the Roanoke Times, “recipes that existed only in the memories of mountain folks for generations.” I really like that idea so I decided to try the family recipe submitted by Angela Naff for “Home Made Ice Cream.”

It was simple enough to make and it is true that no ice cream freezer is needed. So, here it is. Hope you like it. As for me, I’m going to see if the book is on Kindle!

HOME MADE ICE CREAM

Ingredients:

2-3oz pkgs cream cheese 2/3 c cottage cheese 1 c. sugar 3 beaten egg yolks 1 tsp vanilla 1 pint whipping cream 3 stiffly beaten egg whites Graham cracker crumbs

Method:

Cream the cheese and cottage cheese well. Add sugar and egg yolks. Mix thoroughly. Add vanilla and whipping cream that has already been whipped. Fold in the egg whites. Line a 9x9” pan with Graham cracker crumbs. Freeze. Cut into squares and serve.

Serves 6

You can use toppings like chocolate syrup or fresh strawberries.

I have a confession to make. I hurried the recipe along and added 2-8oz packages of cream cheese instead of the required 3oz's. Guess what? It still was fabulous. I can only wonder what it will be like when I try it the right way!

Many of my regular followers have seen my Burning Bowls posted on several occasions. Those who are new to my blog are probably wondering what in the world burning bowls are. Here is the description that best fits the Ceremonial Burning Bowls that I feature. Unity Church has a special ceremony each New Year’s Eve. Everyone watches as the fire burns away all the troubles.

I decided it might be a good idea to create smaller, individual burning bowls and they have been quite a hit. I named my lastest burning bowl, Aiyana, which means Eternal Bliss, in Hopi.

Aiyana is approx. 10"h x 5" wide and about 4 1/2" deep. I created her by sculpting with stoneware clay, which I then placed stained glass in the basin and kiln fired. I used turquoise and a crown of wolves surround her head. Hope you like her. She is just $68.00 You can view her on Etsy or e-mail me to purchase if you live abroad.
