Today I am featuring one of my Goddess Ceremonial necklaces. I have named her “Goddess of Flight.” I love using butterflies in my work. They present a sense of airiness and freedom and what fun to wear.

You can dress them up or down from blue jeans to black dresses. They can also be placed on the wall as a decorative accent or artwork in-between wearings.

Goddess of Flight is approx 3” wide by 6” high including butterfly. The chain is quite long and can be easily adjusted by using clips from craft stores such as ACMoores or Michaels. I like mine long and jangly.

I think we all have a sound..a note that resonates within our being. For some, it is a loud vibration but for others, it is a soft hum that interweaves with our consciousness as we go about our lives. That sound of the soul allows us to carry on, even though times are tough. It pulls us through our hardships and keeps us on an even keel. Listen. Listen carefully and celebrate your own sacred song.

I have sculpted one of my original stoneware clay faces for the center of this Goddess Necklace. She features an antique pendant, even missing one bead but I think it adds to the character. and plenty of turquoise and jangles to help remind you of your song. The base is 2 ½ “ wide by 3 1/2” high and the chain is approx 13 ½ “ from the top of the head to the neck.

Often, people ask me what religion I follow. It’s always a difficult question for me because I believe in many aspects of many religions. Wikepedia says that Universalism, in its primary sense, refers to religious, theological, and philosophical concepts with universal application or applicability. Universalism is a term used to identify particular doctrines considering all people in their formation.

It is also stated that a community that calls itself Universalist, may emphasize the universal principles of most religions and accept other religions in an inclusive manner, believing in a universal reconciliation between humanity and the divine.

So, if I have to give the way I think and believe a name, In many ways, I’d say that I am a Universalist. My father was a Quaker, my mother was Catholic and my grandfather followed Trancendentalism, which started as a movement in the early 19th century. It is a belief of God in all things seen and unseen. This is a simple answer to a complex belief. Henry David Thoreau, was a Trancendentalist. You can see what a complication it was for me sorting things out.

Among many, Buddism is one of the religions that I have come to appreciate. There are numerous aspects of this religion that I can relate to in my everyday life. I found a beautiful Budda pendant that I’ve incorporated into my Universal Woman necklace and I believe the pendant is what prompted the creation of Universal Woman and this post. I am always inspired to create from the objects I find. Below are listed a few of the quotes by Budda that I take pleasure in.

"She Who Knows Her Own Sacred Sound"

Many of you have asked to see what my Goddess necklaces look like being worn by real Goddesses, instead of the usual manniquin I display them on. I’ve highlighted a few of the beautiful women who have purchased them.

One Block East Gallery had a fashion show last fall highlighting art to wear. One of the models wore my “She who Seeks the path of the Ancients.”

Sunshine Fae wore her Triple Goddess necklace to an Earthen Moon Gathering. You can read more about this beautiful Goddess by going to her blog titled Mystic Crone.

Last weekend, this beautiful mother and daughter duo chose the necklaces shown.

When I finished ‘She who knows Her Own Sacred Sound, I knew the name was perfect for her. We as women all have our own sacred sound. It is a tune we carry from birth and speaks of a knowingness that can only be expressed in a melody that seems to come from within. It is that ancient sound that carries us through the difficulties of life and has an origin that dates back to the first Goddess. If you listen carefully, you will begin to hear your own sacred sound resonate from your very soul.

Years ago, I took a correspondence course with Yehwehnode Two Wolves-Twyla Nitch, clan mother of the Seneca tribe in New York. She named her followers “The Keepers of the Stones” and even sent me my own special stone in a little leather pouch. I have kept it through the years and think of her often. She passed away a few years ago. I was glad that I sent her a story I had written about the Seneca’s and her in particular. titled ” Within the Within,” I sent it to Twyla for her approval. She read it and told me that she approved of all but one word. The last word in my story ended with the word “power.” Twyla explained to me that if I changed that name to “withinness,” more “power” would be invoked into my story because it was the “withiness” that takes us to our center and our truth.

Here is the story I wrote.

Within the Within

At a very young age, she had learned to speak the language of the stones and the language of the trees. Her people, the Seneca, Keepers of the Western Door of the symbolic Longhouse, had taught her.

They taught her of the foundation of truth which is called "within the within.'" She learned of the sanctity of the circle and how it symbolizes perfect truth and is considered the pathway of peace and harmony.

But of all the many truths that she was taught, he sould knew a truth that her mind was just beginning to comprehend..HER truth. For there is no collective truth. The truth of one soul is not the same as that of another. She knew that truth's purpos is growth...soul growth. She would be open to all truths but true to her own. She knew that by being true to herself, therein she would find her withiness.

Within the Within is 3” w x 10 1/2 “ long with 81/2 “ chain measured from neck to top of necklace. This particular necklace, unlike some of the other ones I have created, would work well for a shorter gal. I’m very tall and tend to make them all geared toward my height.

I used turquoise and other embellishments and sculpted an original clay face as the focal point of the necklace. I hope whoever receives my necklace wears her with power and withiness.
